Challenging the myth of career mobility: From software engineer to Team Lead IT- Infrastructure
Excerpt
In this employee testimonial, we talk to Jens, our recently promoted IT Infrastructure Team Lead. Two years ago, Jens started at RAYLYTIC as a software engineer. Eager to explore his interest in IT infrastructure, he then transitioned into a new role as a DevOps engineer. Since the beginning of 2023, Jens has taken on a new position as the team lead for our IT-infrastructure team.
Career mobility at a single employer is not always a given. Too often it appears to be more of a myth than reality. Switching employers seems to be the unspoken rule for employees wishing to transition into new roles and take on new responsibilities. Either that or “quiet quitting,” a pattern born of work-related disillusionment resulting in minimal engagement with work beyond the necessary, has unfortunately become the norm.
At RAYLYTIC, this is a set of problems we take active measures to address. And there is no one better to illustrate this than Jens – a freshly promoted team lead.
As a team lead for IT-Infrastructure, what are your role and responsibilities within your team?
In our Team Infrastructure we ensure that our different software products run in a safe and stable environment. I work on things ranging from low level network debugging to cloud architecture and team coordination.
"It is important to me to work in a company where I can proudly stand behind its mission: providing better healthcare."
– Jens, Infrastructure Team Lead at RAYLYTIC
What were your reasons to join RAYLYTIC and to stay ever since?
It is important to me to work in a company where I can proudly stand behind its mission: providing better healthcare. This has not changed in the last two years luckily.
Furthermore, I enjoy that people value my opinion and ideas. We trust each other to make the right decisions. For me this is essential, especially when taking on new responsibilities.
How would you describe your career evolution since you joined us?
A lot has happened! I joined RAYLYTIC working on a very specific project: integrating our new product into the hospital IT landscape. After going live with this product, I have moved to more cloud-focused topics and finally took the position of Team Lead Infrastructure not long ago.
Speaking of development, what have you learned the most since starting at RAYLYTIC?
Working in a growing company is challenging. We have the constant need to rethink processes and habits. Perpetual change requires compromises. I have learned to balance different stakeholders and to engage in meaningful discussions. All with the goal of finding the best possible compromise in the end.
I am thankful to work with a motivated group of people that know that comprise, while sometimes difficult in the short term, ultimately leads to growth as individuals and as a community.
